R.I.P. Waffle Maker 1996-2007
My waffle maker made its last waffle today. After many tasty waffles, and eleven long years, she finally went to the big appliance store in the sky.
Our relationship started 11 years ago. It was fall of 2006 and I was living in Brooklyn while attending Pratt Institute. My friend Chris and I were walking around near NYU in Manhattan when we decided to walk to the World Trade Center. When we got there (it was the weekend) there was nothing to do (of course) so we took the PATH train to Newark, NJ. I mean, where else would two college students go to have a good time? New Jersey, of course.
While exploring downtown Newark, which was extremely decrepit in 1996 (and may still be, for all I know) I discovered a waffle maker at Woolworth’s for about $20.00. I had been thinking about buying one for a while and I finally gave in and splurged on myself. Then we bought slushees and ate them in the median of a busy street where a woman came up and asked us for $5 to buy gas. I can’t remember if we gave her any money.
I’m going to Bed Bath & Beyond with a 20% off coupon to pick up a new one tonight. Hopefully the waffles taste as good even without the adventure involved in purchasing the appliance.

I’m so sorry. I remember Thanksgiving ‘96, and you told me about your waffle-maker purchase.
It’s difficult to lose a reliable appliance. I wish you well.
