UPDATE: If you haven’t been trained as a volunteer, you will need to get the appropriate training first before you allowed in the field. This takes place in Fairfield, and you will need to leave a message at the 800 number above to set this up. Be patient, the phone lines are completely swamped right now it it sounds like the voicemail is full. You can also email volunteer@baykeeper.org to volunteer. I’ve heard that a grassroots cleanup is being organized out of the Sports Basement in the Presidio every day.

There was a surfer quoted in the SF Chronicle today who talked about how she pulled a bird out of the water and started scrubbing it. Bad idea. Most birds cleaned in this manner die very quickly. Birds have to be warmed and stabilized first before they oil is removed. If you really want to help, get involved with an organization that knows what its doing.
